Information on the Measures in Response to COVID-19

Activity levels of the Degree Programs in Systems and Information Engineering (as of June 19)

Our degree programs have drawn up the action guideline and the activity levels as below based on the the state of future activities of the university.
Action Guideline of the Degree Programs in Systems and Information Engineering to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)(June 19, 2020~)

Research activities (for faculty): Lowered from Level 4 to Level 2 as of 19 June

Although research activities are to be carried on, with the most careful consideration of the spread of the infection, shortening the time of staying at the laboratory and working from home shall be considered if possible.

Laboratory activities (for students): Lowered from Level 4 to Level 3 as of 19 June

Only the minimum number of students required to carry on ongoing experiments and research are allowed access to the laboratory. Those who visit the laboratory should not stay there for a long time. Others work from home in principle.

Visitors invited by the faculty members: Lowered from Level 4 to Level 3 as of 19 June

Only the minimum number of visitors required to carry on ongoing experiments and research are allowed access to the laboratory under the direction of the faculty member who invited them. The visitors should not stay there for a long time.

Classes(Lectures・Seminars・Practical activities): Level 4

Only online classes.

On-campus meetings: Lowered from Level 4 to Level 3 as of 19 June

Face-to-face meetings are to be restricted to the the minimum necessary and online meetings are strongly recommended.

Administrative structure: Lowered from Level 3 to Level 2 as of 19 June

Staggered working hours and working from home are recommended with the most careful consideration of the spread of the infection.

Message from the Dean

To New Students, Current Students, Faculty Members, and Employees of the Degree Programs in Systems and Information Engineering:

As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, our university has revised the academic calendar for AY 2020 on March 26 and decided to begin classes on April 27 (Monday). Furthermore, the following policies were announced as measures for the spring semester on April 1: (1) students who are currently spending their time at their family home, etc. should stay their instead of moving to the university; (2) class subjects offered in the ABC modules of the spring semester shall be basically conducted online; (3) only in the case of laboratories where the faculty member has an idea of the health condition of the students on a daily basis, it shall be possible to carry out experiments, class exercises, etc. in small groups on the condition that they are not in closed spaces with poor ventilation and after everyone wore masks and took their body temperature.

After that, in response to the spread of COVID-19, the Japanese government has decided on the policy to increase the number of countries and regions on the no-entry list of foreign nationals to a total of 73 the on April 2 and this began implementation from 0:00 am on April 3. Moreover, following the request from the governor of Ibaraki prefecture on April 2, Tsukuba city is calling for residents to cooperate in the voluntary ban from leaving home at night during the weekdays from April 3 to 10 and during the weekend on April 4 and 5.

In light of circumstances, we would like to make the following request to everyone.

1. To students who are having a difficulty in entering into Japan and students who are staying at home after entering into Japan

Students who are having a difficulty in entering into Japan and students who are staying at home after entering into Japan should first contact and consult with their academic advisor and Academic Service Office for the Systems and Information Engineering Area irrespective of being a new student or current student. Moreover, if your contact information listed during enrollment as a new student has changed, be sure to contact the Academic Service Office. If the enrollment procedure has been completed, even if you cannot enter into Japan, please rest assure that you will be treated as enrolled in our university.

For current students, those who are having difficulty in entering into Japan and or staying at home after entering into Japan and have yet to initiate a contact should call their academic advisor or Academic Service Office immediately.

2. To faculty members and employees

Pay constant attention to the physical and mental health of students. Moreover, hold online meetings and work at home even in small-group seminars.

3. In regards to the future

Changes in the situation caused by COVID-19 are at an exceptionally fast rate and to be candid, beyond calculation.
We are right at this very moment at a crossroads between an overshoot and convergence of the situation. Students are confronted with this sort of problem in a new environment and have an intense concern with not only that of their health but also their academic life. However, in any situation, faculty members and employees will always act and take measures to protect the interests of the students to the maximum extent possible. As such, students should freely consult with their academic advisors. Moreover, we ask faculty members and employees to constantly act with the interests of the students in mind.

The Degree Programs in Systems and Information Engineering will try with a unified voice to work around this unprecedented situation, for the academic life of the students and education and research of faculty members and employees to be productive as has happened in the past, and hopefully to be more successful than normal.

To students who don’t have sufficient network environments to take online courses (April 7, 2020)

Considering current situations due to the impact of the COVID-19, our Degree Programs have decided to hold courses online in principle. However, there might be some students who don’t have sufficient network environments to take online courses. We will take measures not to make that student’s disadvantages. Therefore, please don’t worry and keep up with your study with text books and other materials suggested in the syllubus.
