One-Year Doctoral Program for Working Individuals


  1. To ease the financial and time burdens for working individuals by giving them a chance to receive doctorates in the shortest possible period of time (1 year)
  2. To support excellent researchers and highly qualified professionals who are the lead to the next generation of the country
  3. To help improve the quality of research of working individuals by providing appropriate research guidance leading to the successful completion of their course work

Eligible applicants

Working individuals with excellent academic records and research skills, who passed the regular three-year doctoral program examination, are eligible to apply. For those applicants who are not evaluated to be eligible, a minimum of three academic years of study is required for the completion of the Ph.D. degree. It is important to note, however, that second chances are given for them to transfer to the One-Year Program in case their academic achievements after the admission seem strongly suggestive of their success in the Program.

Entrance examination

  1. There is no entrance examination for the One-Year Doctoral Program. Those applicants evaluated to be eligible for the Program will be interviewed by our Selection Committee.
  2. Applicants for the One-Year Doctoral Program must submit a resume, indicating (1) the highest academic degree achieved; (2) a choice of research area to pursue in the Program and its relationships to the specifics of their work roles; (3) a list of achievements made in research; and (4) a proposal of future research.
  3. Each applicant for the One-Year Doctoral Program is required to have an interview with a faculty member who the applicant desires as a director of his or her future research, before submitting the application resume.

Educational Process

  1. Achievement Evaluation System
    At the time of admission, students in the One-Year Doctoral Program are evaluated in terms of the levels of technical knowledge and skills, knowledge of real-world problems to which to apply the expertise, potential abilities to find solutions to the problems, presentation skills to express their thoughts and ideas, and past academic performance (1st Stage Evaluation). Additionally, in the first four months after entering the Program, the students evaluate themselves and are evaluated by the faculty members as to whether they possess or have acquired skills to look at the problems from broader perspectives and have potential abilities to conduct research that meets or exceeds international standards (2nd Stage Evaluation). The subjective and objective ratings are made again in eight months of the first year in terms of the levels of their understandings about basic knowledge in the fields, their expertise and abilities to perform research accomplishments, and their overall qualification for Ph.D.candidacy (3rd Stage Evaluation).   2. In addition to the face-to-face seminars and lectures, we offer students virtual Dual Campus by connecting campuses in Tsukuba and Tokyo using technologies integrated for the purposes of e-learining and video conferences.
  3. Intensive courses are offered all day (Monday through Friday) and daytime on Saturdays at Tsukuba Campus.
  4. Education and research guidance is provided by the Advisory Group consisting of multiple faculty members.
